10 Facts: Exposing a little more of Acropolis
Athens’ Acropolis is possibly the most famous place in all of Greece. It holds a lot more than the well-known views of the Parthenon and the city. Here are 10 facts that uncover the surprising side of the Acropolis, perfect for history buffs, art and culture lovers or simply the curious.
1. “Acropolis” Means “High City”.
The term was derived from the Greek words “akron” and “polis”. It was the natural stronghold of ancient Athens.
2.The Acropolis Wasn’t Just One Temple
The stages are purposefully not so attractive in order that the Parthenon rules the theme at the Acropolis.
3.A Sacred Site for Centuries
Many thousands of years before the classical monuments were erected, even back to the Neolithic period, the Acropolis was a sacred place.
4.The Parthenon Was Once a Church and a Mosque
Across several hundred years, it was converted first into a Christian church and then, under Ottoman control, a mosque.
4.The Parthenon Housed a Giant Statue
Across several hundred years, it was converted first into a Christian church and then, under Ottoman control, a mosque.
5.The Parthenon Was Once a Church and a Mosque
Inside the Parthenon stood a 12-metre gold-and-ivory statue of Athena made by Phidias. Sadly, it no longer survives.
6.No Straight Lines
Although the Parthenon seems symmetrical, they did not use any straight lines. To fix visual distortions, the columns bulge slightly (a technique called *entasis*).
7.It Has Survived Explosions and Wars
In 1687, a Venetian cannonball struck an Ottoman ammunition store inside the Parthenon, which did a great deal of damage.
8.Restoration Is Ongoing
The Acropolis is continuously undergoing restoration with original materials where possible, with some works dating back to the 19th century.
9.It Offers the Best Views of Athens
When you look down from the top, you can see the whole of Athens, including Mount Lycabettus, the sea and the modern city extending in every direction.
10.It Pairs Perfectly With a Food Tour
