Choosing a Greek Wine🍷
Greek wine is a must if you’re planning on visiting Athens and want to experience the city as a local. One of the oldest wine producers in the world, Greece is filled with indigenous grape varieties that reflect its terroirs and history. It’s the hidden secret!
Wherever you are, be it a food tour in Athens or in a traditional taverna after your Acropolis guided tour, one thing is for sure: Greek wine.
Start with the Classics.
One of the most famous Greek wine is Assyrtiko which is a crisp white wine. It is perfect on a warm afternoon in Athens and goes well with seafood and grilled vegetables.
If you like red wine, reach for Xinomavro; it’s bold and complex – a cousin of Italy’s Nebbiolo. It’s ideal with hearty Greek dishes like lamb or moussaka.
Try Local Favorites.
When in Athens; sampling Agiorgitiko from Peloponnese, it’s smooth, fruity and easy to drink. You can try dry Moschofilero, which has a floral quality and goes very well with Greek meze.
When travelling, ordered a glass of Retsina, a traditional Greek wine flavored with pine resin. It’s an acquired taste but a truly local experience!
Cheers to Exploring Athens Through Wine.
When you taste Greek wine you taste the culture of the place. While you’re sipping Assyrtiko in a sunlit square or Retsina over souvlaki, it’s an age-old story.
